COTD – 7th July 2011 – Elekid TM

Let’s hear it for another Baby Pokemon! My choice for today is the rather aggressive Elekid from HS: Triumphant.
This guy shares all the features of a usual Baby Pokemon; 30HP, free retreat, no weakness or resistance, a free attack and the ‘Sweet Sleeping Face’ Poke Body. As we all know, Sweet Sleeping Face is a very nice Poke Body that gives you immunity if the Baby is asleep, but what does this Baby’s attack do to send it to sleep in the first place?

Elekid’s attack is called ‘Sparking Ball’ and it allows you to do 20 damage to any Pokemon on your opponent’s side of the field and then you fall asleep. This is actually a very nice attack even though the snipe sounds fairly weak. For the start of the game it doesn’t seem like an attack that could benefit, but in the long run, this extra damage can bring you into range of some very nice KOs. That extra 20 damage you put on in hindsight means that beefy Pokemon such as Reshiram, Zerkom, Magnezone etc are all put into the OHKO range by other Pokemon without the need for PlusPower.

Overall, Elekid is a very nice addition to decks that struggle to reach that 140 magic number for OHKOs in this format and enough practice with it can get you some really sneaky KOs later on in the game. Pair that with the usual, but very handy Poke Body and you have yet another solid Baby starter. I’m going to give Elekid a very nice 7/10. A very strange choice to some people, but in the right deck, you may have just found your new favourite baby!

Thanks for reading,

Dan

i hav tried this alongside mandibuzz to kick start the sniping so that u dont waste the first turns hitting nothing whilst evolving up kingdra, although kingdra in the later game is still definately required, however i think this kid does have some potential in yanmega variants also because the turn 1 20 dmg combined with a turn to yanmega means that benched basics are taken down by linear attack, an intersting card overall and a couple of decks to try it in, good stuff Dan, keep um coming :)
