COTD – 19th July 2011 – Tepig Promo

My pick for today is the Tepig Promo (BW07) from one of the latest blister packs currently available.

This Tepig has 60HP, average for a Basic, along with two attacks and a single retreat cost. This Tepig was brought to light along with the hype of Magnezone/Emboar conbined with the fact that everyone was running at least 3 Babies in their decks back then.

Builders of Magnezone/Emboar had a few options for Tepigs, but this one was able to serve some form of damage to those pesky Baby Pokemon. Baby Pokemon are immune to damage from attacks while they are sleeping, be it after an ‘Eeeeek’, a ‘Mischievous Punch’ or any other Baby attack. What this Tepig is able to do is use its first attack ‘Singe’ to inflict burn on the defending  Pokemon if you flip heads on a coin flip.

This managed to get some much needed damage onto a sleeping Baby rather than just pass and many people choose to run this over the other Tepig in their Magnezone/Emboar lists. This is actually a very nice strategy to get the damage on early. After inflicting the burn, two tails on burn will automatically KO the Baby while it sleeps. While this needs a bit of luck to happen, its better than just having to pass on doing no damage whatsoever.

I haven’t done enough testing with the deck to make an informed choice of which Tepig to choose, but this one seems the way to go, but Baby Pokemon are seeing rapid decrease in play at the moment with people running just 2 if you’re lucky. If you’re still making this decision, you may want to try out both and see which one inflicts helpful damage more often.

Overall, it has a very useful attack against a sleeping Baby Pokemon as well as any other Pokemon your opponent starts with to get some damage on there early. I’m going to give this card an average 6/10. Since it is a heavily luck based attack, it isn’t going to get a higher score than this. That being said though, definitely test this one out for those of you still running Magnezone/Emboar.

Thanks for reading, make sure you check out PokeClass Extra and comment below what you think of the card.
