COTD – 31st July 2011 – Double Colourless Energy
My pick for today is the second of the energy card COTDs and I’m going to be looking at Double Colourless Energy.
This card has been extremely popular ever since its release in the HeartGold SoulSilver Base Set (it was even released in the original Base Set!) and even launched the most popular deck in the previous format to stardom, LuxChomp. In this format, Double Colourless is still reigning as the most popular special energy and can be used in many ways to get your more costly attacks set up quickly.
If any of you newer players aren’t quite sure how Double Colourless works, then it has a simple yet powerful effect. When Double Colourless is attached to a Pokemon, it provides 2 Colourless Energy which is going to help you to launch attacks a full turn before manually attaching both those energy.
Many of the most powerful attackers that utilise Double Colourless include Zoroark, Zekrom and Reshiram. Zoroark is one of my personal favourite Pokemon at the moment and by just attaching one of these energy cards, you are able to copy one of the defending Pokemon’s attacks and use it as your own. This can be ANY attack since you don’t need the appropriate energy to use them. Normally, it would take two turns to set this attack up, but since Double Colourless covers the cost in one go, you can have this attack going in a single turn. This just shows you how well Double Colourless can be implemented to speed up otherwise costly attacks.
Also, since Double Colourless provides 2 energy at a time, you can use it for a double retreat cost. Pokemon like Reshiram and Zekrom both have 2 retreat cost and when you don’t have a Switch in hand, Double Colourless can serve as your retreat for the turn, even though it takes up your attachment for the turn. Providing two energy can also help in attacks that require you to discard two energy, which is what made Garchomp C Lv.X’s attack os powerful last format.
Overall, this card is extremely playable in almost any deck that has a from of 2 Colourless cost in their attack so the score has got to be high. Just a random tid-bit of info for you: This card is going to be further reprinted in the set after Emerging Powers probably meaning that we will have it next rotation as well! I’m going to give Double Colourless Energy a very nice 9/10. It can only be included at a maximum of 4 for good reason, but this card can fit well in over half the top competitive decks at the moment which is good enough reason to have a huge score.
Thanks for reading today’s COTD and make sure you comment below what you think of the card
