COTD – 11th September 2011 – Sage’s Training

Sage’s Training used to be a very overlooked card, but being in a format with not a very big selection for draw support, it is starting to get some serious recognition. The question being: Does it deserve that recognition? In my opinion yes, it absolutely does.

Sage’s Training allows you to look at the top 5 cards of your deck, choose 2 to put in your hand, then discard the other 3. At first glance, discarding 3 cards doesn’t seem like a good thing, but think about it: you have the chance of discarding cards that if you would draw other wise, they would be dead cards, such as certain techs for certain matchups (Ex: a reshiram tech for kingdra), or babies and collectors after the feild is already set up. Pair that up with being able to pick what cards to put in your hand, and you’ve got yourself a pretty solid card.

Sage’s Training can fit in just about any deck, I like it in my decks paired with PONT, using PONT if you have a rubbish hand and want to start new, and using Sage’s if you have some cards in your hand that will benifit you in future turns, but you still don’t have certain cards you need for that turn. Sage’s Training also works great in decks that try to burn through the deck as fast as possible to get the cards you need, such as ZPS. But a deck that I really like Sage’s in is ReshiPhlosion. It’s great to get energies in the discard for Typhlosion’s Afterburner and it’s also a great draw support overall. It is a good subsitute for Ninetails if you are too scared of catcher to run it.

For playabilty, I give Sage’s Training a 9/10. The only reason it isn’t a 10/10 is because of the chance you discard something you regret in future turns. As for artwork, I give it a 8/10. For a supporter it has some pretty cool artwork, there is a middle aged guy, standing there, folding his arms like a boss, along with a Bellsprout and Hoothoot doing the same thing…add the awesome tower in the background and they look like they own the world.

So if you are stuck on what draw supporter to include in your deck, definitely test out Sage’s Training. It is a solid draw supporter with more good coming from it than bad. And when you do test it out, it will probably grow on you. So thanks for reading my review of Sage’s Training, be sure to leave a comment giving your opinion on the the card, as well as some constructive criticism for my future articles, peace.
