COTD – 17th July 2011 – Slowking HS/CL

Today’s Card of the Day is Slowking, originally from HeartGold SoulSilver Base Set, but reprinted in Call of Legends with better artwork (obviously personal opinion).

Slowking is a Stage 1 Psychic type with a single Poke Power and an attack. Now the attack isn’t really that good at all so I won’t touch on that since Slowking is all about the Power.

‘Second Sight’ allows you to look at the top 3 cards of either yours or your opponent’s deck and put them back on top of the deck in any order. This means that you can either determine your own top decks, or control what your opponent draws the next turn. This immediately reminds you of Chatot G from Platinum which was a coming into play power, but Slowking allows you to do this every single turn making it a tough thing to deal with when it gets going.

This card was one of the key components to Weavile/Slowking/Ambipom which went all the way to top 8 at Canadian Nationals, causing quite a stir. The deck focuses on plucking useful cards from the opponent’s hand with both Weavile and Ambipom and you control their top decks, making them draw dead, with Slowking. This proved to be a very successful lock deck, making it far in a major tournament and showed how well Slowking can function in the competitive world.

The bad thing about Slowking is its retreat cost, especially when the next set comes out. 2 retreat cost can be really tough to get around when Pokemon Catcher comes out since it is designed to be just a bench sitter. Even with Pokemon Reversal at the moment, it can become a bit tricky to get out of the active spot without committing that crucial energy. Slowpoke, the pre-evolution, also has this problem and starting with it really can slow your set up.

Other than that, Slowking is a very fun card to play and the deck mentioned above really can be trouble to play against when it gets rolling fast. I’m going to give Slowking a 6/10. It shows competitive promise, but could see less play come late August, when higher retreat benched Pokemon become riskier to play. Apart from that, a very fun card to try out!

Thanks for checking out this Card of the Day, make sure you check out PokeClass Extra and I’ll see you in the next post!

I like this card, but it usually only works early game, and if you are setting a slowking up, you arent setting up your attacker. Also this stands no chance against yanmega due to the amount of judge and copycat they go through. Even decks that use PONT/Communication (which is almost every deck) just re shuffle the cards anyway..

Whilst I agree, come pokemon catcher, the card will greatly depreciate due to its retreat cost, in any deck that requires control over your opponent, this card should be running into your arms to the sound of a love song. Its incredibly useful and can, assuming it is used with other disruptive elements such as weavile to remove hand refreshers, completely stagnate your opponent, making him easy pickings for your menagerie of other finely feathered friends.
